4 Things That Take New Fathers By Surprise

I have written several pieces during sleep deprived frenzies since my son was born. They never made it to being published; since my brain fog had continued to hold such a grip. Hence the writing date and publishing date are quite far apart.

This was written about 6 months post partum and is being edited and published at 10 months.

Many things about being a father have been hard to conceive; let alone feel like I can actually take action on.

Since it was 2020, I like many people I interact with, had a laundry list of concise stances that I took on the big social, political and moral topics that I could unroll for conversations at parties. The nuance around them would often change but I had never actually swung to the other side of the topic.

Then I had a son.

Vast swaths of knee jerk reactions that once aligned with my philosophical or intellectual stance on things now somersaulted to the opposite side of the fence.

Most off these I haven’t reconciled yet and I have a hunch they will remain a dichotomy where there will be no right answer. Which is a hard pill to…
